Workplace Violence is a serious problem today! The news has been flooded with incidents like the Yale murder & Harvard poisoning and most recently, the deadly research workplace violence attack that occurred at University of Alabama-Huntsville. Researcher, Amy Bishop, Ph.D, supposedly disturbed at tenure decisions, allegedly opened fire in a department faculty meeting killing three and wounding three others. Like other tragic incidences, Bishop's history showed a warning sign: strong dissatisfaction that her tenure had been denied. Detailed re-examination of the suspect's past history revealed her participation in the 1986 shooting death of her brother had been ruled "accidental". More recently, she had been a suspect in a 1993 letter bomb case to a Harvard Medical School professor. Many incidents of violence have common warning signs but these can be hard to pinpoint. Scientists, especially, can be "normal", though quirky. Join Melissa as she walks you through the difficult task of differentiating eccentricity, from simmering anger, and violence proclivity. She will discuss such limited tools as are available for predicting aberration. Melissa Fleischer, Esq., is a management-side employment law attorney with over twenty (20) years experience and founded HR Learning Center LLC. Ms. Fleischer has successfully represented numerous clients in employment discrimination litigation as well as providing preventive counseling and training on workplace issues. She is a frequent lecturer on a wide range of employment law topics including seminars and workshops on sexual harassment training, diversity training, FMLA/ADA training and workplace violence prevention training. She is nationally recognized as an expert in her field. Ms. Fleischer is also a Chapter Editor for the FMLA Treatise that has recently been published by BNA. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and adjunct faculty for the Professional Development Center of SUNY/Westchester Community College in Valhalla, New York. Ms. Fleischer earned a juris doctor degree from The National Law Center at the George Washington University and a Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, from New York University. |

Pogo Voskanian, M.D. is an associate professor of Psychiatry at Drexel / formerly MCP Hahnemann University Medical School, where he directs and teaches the Psychiatry and Law Program. Dr. Voskanian has extensive clinical and forensic experience. He has served as the program director of the Philadelphia Prison System Mental Health Services, and has also served as the director of Psychiatry and Law program at the Medical College of Virginia. He is active in multiple professional organizations and serves on various committees. Currently in private practice he consults for Forensic Aftercare Programs in Philadelphia, provides treatment for dually diagnosed patients and has an extensive clinical practice. He is also consultant for State of New Jersey Department of Human Services, and State of Pennsylvania Bureau of Professional and Occupational Affairs. |
