Great news! Your proposal has become a funded grant. But even though your proposal may be approved and funded, nothing can happen without a budget set up in the institution’s fiscal system. One of the most critically important actions a PI can take at the beginning of a project is to sit down with fiscal and purchasing agents to discuss what the grant is about and anticipated expenditures and timing.
During the project startup there are many potential challenges associated with purchasing that include failure to anticipate bid requirements for large equipment purchase, the need for competitive quotes, and appreciation of the ins and outs of the purchasing system. Lack of knowledge of potentially long lead times can throw a wrench into project timelines. Inevitably revisions to the budget may need to be made to accommodate revised goals and work plans.
During this interactiver webinar, your expert presenter, Dr. Michael Lesiecki, will clearly define the processes involved between the grant acceptance and getting the budget initiated. PIs will realize how to use the proposal itself as their starting point for guiding the spending of funds and how to reallocate those funds should the circumstances dictate. PIs will learn who is responsible for grant expenditures, how to judge the allowability of expenditures, and what grant funds may not be used for.
5 Key Take-Aways:
- How to set up the budget and use it as a management tool
- Processes and pitfalls for the purchase of equipment and services
- How to determine how the project is doing fiscally, how to make sure you are spending enough and how to manage cost transfers

- Diminishing problems with auditors by avoiding prohibited expenditures and inconsistent spending patterns
